What We Believe

"What comes into our minds when we think about God is the most important thing about us." - A.W. Tozer

Statement of Faith

As an independent congregation, the members of Zion Church Thomasville hold to these core doctrines which are developed from the Holy Bible. These statements summarize what we believe about…

The Bible

We believe the 66 books of the Old and New Testaments of the Holy Scriptures to be the very Word of God, authoritative, infallible, and without error in the original writings. The Bible, being fully inspired by God in its entirety, is the authority for faith and life.
2 Timothy 3:16-17; II Peter 1:20-21; Matthew 5:18; John 16:12-13; Psalm 119:105; Romans 15:4; Hebrews 4:12-13; James 1:22; Acts 20:32

God

We believe there is one God who is personal, infinite, perfect and sovereign, and He exists eternally in three persons as Father, Son and Holy Spirit.
Deuteronomy 6:4; 2 Corinthians 13:14; Matthew 3:16-17; 28:19-20; Genesis 1:26-27; 3:22; 1 Peter 1:2-3

The Person and Work of Jesus Christ

We believe that the Lord Jesus Christ, the eternal Son of God, became man, without ceasing to be God, having been conceived of the Holy Spirit and born of the virgin Mary, in order that He might reveal God and redeem sinful man. We believe that He accomplished our redemption through His sinless life, sacrificial death on the cross, and His bodily resurrection from the dead. We believe that the Lord Jesus Christ is now in heaven exalted at the right hand of God where, as High Priest for His people, He fulfills the ministry of Representative, Intercessor, and Advocate.
John 1:1-4; 9-14; Luke 1:35; Romans 3:24-25; 4:24-25; 8:34; Colossians 1:15-20; Hebrews 7:22-25; 9:24; 1 John 2:1-2

The Person of the Holy Spirit

We believe that the Holy Spirit is a divine Person of God, and works in convicting man of sin, producing righteousness, and providing judgment, indwelling all believers of this present age. In the life of the believer, He is involved in the new birth, the sealing of salvation, and developing holiness.
Romans 8:4; 1 Corinthians 12; Ephesians 1:13-14; 4:5; Colossians 3:16; John 16:8

Man

We believe that mankind, male and female, was created in the image of God, but that in Adam and Eve’s rebellion the human race fell, inherited a sinful nature, became alienated from God, and can be restored to God‘s favor only through the work of Jesus Christ and the ministry of the Holy Spirit.
Genesis 1:26-27; 3:1-24; Romans 3:22-23; 5:12; 6:23

Salvation

We believe salvation comes to man by grace alone, through faith alone, in Christ alone. It is a free gift of God, not earned by works, but received by repentance and faith in Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior. Good works are evidence of true salvation, which is forever secure in Christ Jesus.
John 1:12; 3:16-18; 10:28; 14:6; Ephesians 1:5-13; 2:8-10; Romans 6:23; 1 Corinthians 1:4-8; I John 1:9; Hebrews 12:9-11

The Church

We believe that Jesus Christ is the head of His universal church, which is composed of all who trust in Jesus’ finished work for salvation and submit to Him as Lord. The church exists to worship God, edify believers, and fulfill the Great Commission by making disciples of all nations.
Acts 1:8; 2:42-47; 4:32-37; 1 Corinthians 12; 1 Timothy 3:15; Ephesians 2:19-22; 4:11-13; 5:23-32; Colossians 1:24; Matthew 28:18-20; Romans 10:9 -15; 1 Peter 3:15

The Ordinances

We believe the Lord Jesus commanded two ordinances for the church: believer’s baptism and the Lord’s Supper. Water baptism is a one-time public profession and sign of what the Holy Spirit has performed in the heart of the believer. The Lord’s Supper is a recurring ordinance observed by the believer as a memorial of Christ’s sacrifice for our redemption.
Matthew 26:26-29; 28:19; Acts 10:47-48; 1 Corinthians 11:27-31; Romans 6:3-4

The Second Coming of Jesus Christ

We believe in the future second coming of Jesus Christ to judge the living and the dead, to establish His kingdom, and to reign forever. He will bring final victory over sin and death making all things new.
1 Thessalonians 4:13-18; 5:1-3; 1 Corinthians 15:51-53; Revelation 1:7; 20:6; Zechariah 14:4-11; John 14:1-3; Hebrews 9:27-28; Matthew 24:29-31; 36-44

The Eternal State

All people will experience the bodily resurrection, believers to the state of eternal life and unbelievers to the state of eternal punishment.
Luke 16:19-26; 23:43; 2 Corinthians 5:1; 2 Thessalonians 1:9; Revelation 20:11-15; John 5:28-29
Scripture references are not exhaustive, but are provided as a helpful start to study each doctrine
